Thousands Gather for Barefoot Running Event in Padang Pariaman

Approximately 2,000 participants from various regencies and cities across Indonesia took part in the Barefoot Running Padang Pariaman, held on the beaches of Batang Anai District, Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra, on Saturday.

“Barefoot Running Padang Pariaman is the first barefoot running event on Sumatra Island,” stated the Regent of Padang Pariaman, John Kenedy Azis, in Batang Anai. He noted that the participation of thousands of runners from different regions serves as evidence of Padang Pariaman’s national appeal.

John assessed that the event is not merely about sport, but also encompasses tourism and environmental preservation, allowing participants to enjoy the natural beauty of Padang Pariaman while exercising. “This serves as proof that Padang Pariaman possesses great appeal as a sport tourism destination,” he added.

He further noted that the participants have boosted local businesses, including accommodation, restaurants, local transport, and the sales of micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) products. The Padang Pariaman government intends to continue hosting various sporting events to attract more tourists and drive community economic growth.

One participant, Imelda, expressed a desire for similar activities to be held annually due to their significant health and recreational benefits. The event featured both competitive races and a fun run with prizes.

“Initially, this event was designed as a regional sporting event for West Sumatra,” said the Head of the Padang Pariaman Tourism, Youth, and Sports Office, Anton Wira Tanjung, during a preparatory meeting in Parik Malintang. However, Anton concluded that the event continues to expand as the number of participants grows from various regions across Indonesia and abroad.
