Thousands flee over quake rumor
KAMPAR, Riau: Thousands of Kampar residents fled their homes on
Sunday after rumors that the Koto Panjang Dam had cracked during
the recent earthquake in Nias.
As of Monday morning, many residents were still seeking refuge
on higher ground.
The secretary to the Kampar regency administration, Zulher,
condemned those responsible for spreading the rumor and causing
panic.
Local government officials were able to convince most
residents that the rumor was untrue and many people began
returning home at about 10 a.m.
Kampar Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Abdul Hakim Gani said the
police were investigating the matter. -- JP
