Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Sub-Department of Food Security, Maritime Affairs, and Agriculture (KPKP) of the Thousand Islands Regency is urging residents in the area to build food security through the planting of corn seedlings and hydroponic vegetables.

“Hydroponic cultivation serves as an effective solution in island regions with limited land,” stated Indah Susanti, Chair of the PKK Mobilisation Team for the Thousand Islands Regency, in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She noted that despite land constraints, residents can still achieve optimal harvests.

“We harvested several vegetables planted by residents at the Child-Friendly Open Public Space (RPTRA) Tanjung Elang Berseri together with the KPKP Sub-Department,” she said.

The harvest from that location included 5 kg of chillies, 12 kg of water spinach, 1 kg of lettuce, 7 kg of mustard greens, 3 kg of aubergines, 8 kg of spinach, and 2 kg of cassava leaves.

According to her, this activity is part of efforts to promote family food security while educating the community on utilising limited land through hydroponic methods.

Her side aims to encourage the public, particularly PKK cadres, to be more active in using their home yards for planting vegetables.

“In addition to meeting family food needs, the results can also provide economic value,” she said.

Meanwhile, Jamaluddin, Head of Panggang Island Village, supports such activities because they provide direct benefits to residents.

In his view, besides enhancing food security, these activities also strengthen community solidarity and promote healthy living through the consumption of fresh, home-grown vegetables.

“We hope that urban farming and hydroponic activities can continue to be developed in the Panggang Island area and surroundings,” he said.
