Thousand Islands KPKP Prevents Rabies Spread on Sabira Island
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Food Security, Maritime, and Agriculture Sub-Department (KPKP) of the Thousand Islands is preventing the spread of rabies in the island region by conducting sterilisation and rabies vaccination for rabies-transmitting animals (HPR) on Sabira Island, Sabira Village, Pulau Harapan Sub-District, North Thousand Islands Sub-District. “Today, we are holding free vaccination and sterilisation for 251 animals free of charge,” said the Head of the Thousand Islands KPKP Sub-Department, Nurliati, in Jakarta on Friday. According to her, this activity is part of the ongoing commitment of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) to maintain Jakarta’s rabies-free status while improving animal welfare, particularly in coastal areas. She added that this vaccination is the result of collaboration between the Thousand Islands KPKP Sub-Department and the Let’s Adopt Indonesia community. “We are also focused on maintaining environmental health through animal population control,” she said. In addition, the sterilisation programme is carried out to prevent a surge in the stray cat population that could disrupt ecosystem balance and environmental aesthetics. “Rabies vaccination is given as an initial mitigation step to protect the public from the threat of this deadly disease,” she explained. She mentioned that 77 cats have been sterilised, consisting of 31 males and 46 females. Furthermore, rabies vaccination was also given to 174 other cats. She stated that through these preventive measures, we hope to create a healthy, safe, and sustainably rabies-free environment in the Thousand Islands. “The goal is for the community to feel comfortable in their activities,” she said.
