This Is the Secret Behind the Great Pyramid's Resilience Despite Earthquakes Shaking It for Thousands of Years
The Great Pyramid of Giza, built over 4,500 years ago by Ancient Egypt, has withstood devastating earthquakes. A recent study has revealed the architectural design secrets behind its remarkable resistance to shaking. The monument remained intact during earthquakes of magnitude 6.8 in 1847 and 5.8 in 1992. To understand its resilience, researchers measured ambient vibrations at 37 locations both inside the pyramid and in the surrounding ground. The findings showed that the pyramid’s natural vibration frequency averages 2.3 Hz. ‘Most measurements show a very similar fundamental frequency,’ said Dr. Asem Salama, lead author of the study. The key to resilience lies in the frequency difference between the pyramid and the ground; with the pyramid at 2.3 Hz and the surrounding ground at 0.6 Hz, resonance is avoided, preventing the amplification of ground motion from triggering collapse. Additionally, the pyramid sits on limestone bedrock with very low seismic vulnerability, providing extra protection from the base upward. In analysing how vibrations propagate from the ground up, researchers found that amplification increases with height, peaking inside the King’s Chamber about 48.68 metres above ground. Interestingly, above this chamber, the Relieving Chambers—empty cavities directly above the King’s Chamber—appear to dampen the shocks. The researchers believe these cavities function as natural dampers that stabilise the pyramid while distributing seismic energy. Dr. Salama explained that the combination of massive geometry, symmetric shape, careful mass distribution, a solid limestone foundation, and the separation of frequencies minimizes the risk of seismic damage to Khufu’s Pyramid. ‘Personally, I believe this resilience results from highly refined construction practices developed through centuries of experimentation, observation, and continual improvement, rather than deliberate modern seismic engineering.’ Although not engineered specifically for earthquakes with modern technology, the expertise of ancient Egyptian geotechnics and architecture naturally produced a building with extraordinary long-term resilience.
