The government has designated Friday as the day for implementing work from home or WFH for civil servants (ASN). Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that the policy was calculated based on experiences following the COVID response. “Why Friday? Because some ministries have already done that, working four days a week with applications, this after the COVID period,” Airlangga said during a press conference on Tuesday (31/3/2026). Airlangga also mentioned that the workload on Fridays is not as heavy as on other days. However, he emphasised that public services will continue to operate despite the implementation of WFH one day a week for ASN. “We chose Friday because it’s half, meaning not full from Monday to Thursday. But public services will still run,” Airlangga stated. The government also requested that the one-day-a-week WFH policy does not disrupt performance. Each office is asked to design a system to ensure the policy runs normally. “Productive activities, including banking and the capital market and others, will still operate, and they are allowed to arrange it in their offices with certain applications, and certain government applications are already running,” he said. Several efficiency policies implemented by the government following the impact of the war in the Middle East will take effect from 1 April. The government is also limiting the use of official vehicles for ASN by 50% and encouraging the use of public transport. “Mobility efficiency includes limiting official vehicles by 50% except for operations and electric vehicles. Encouraging the use of public transport. So reducing official vehicles and using public transport as much as possible,” Airlangga said. The government is also implementing work from home for private sector employees. WFH for private sector employees will be adjusted to the characteristics and needs of each business sector. “The implementation of work from home for the private sector will be further regulated in a Circular from the Minister of Manpower,” Airlangga said. “While still considering the characteristics and needs of each business sector,” he added.
