This is Pertagas OSSA's Strategy to Promote Village Economic Independence
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - PT Pertamina Gas through its Operation South Sumatera Area (OSSA), or Pertagas OSSA, continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability while empowering communities, particularly in South Sumatra. This commitment is realised through various innovative programmes that integrate environmental, social, and economic aspects.
One flagship programme is Pesona (Organic Pesticide Sidomulyo from Waste and Cow Urine), implemented in Sidomulyo Village, Muara Enim Regency. This programme exemplifies circular economy practices, where waste is processed into valuable products. Organic waste is no longer discarded in landfills but sorted and processed into eco-enzymes, then combined with cow urine waste to produce organic pesticides through fermentation.
The programme delivers tangible impacts by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills while creating economic value from previously unused waste. This approach not only minimises pollution but also opens new business opportunities for the community.
In addition to Pesona, Pertagas OSSA runs the Pusaka Artha programme, which focuses on managing water resources, land, and natural produce. The programme addresses various village challenges, from suboptimal environmental management and water scarcity to low productivity and farmer incomes.
Through Pusaka Prana, Pertagas OSSA promotes waste processing into organic fertilisers and bio-pesticides, while building water infrastructure to support irrigation and flood control. These efforts have increased agricultural productivity, including raising rice harvest frequency from three to four times a year.
Meanwhile, Pusaka Loka integrates cultural approaches to engage youth, such as through jaranan arts. These activities are linked to agriculture and livestock sectors, fostering a new generation of farmers. The result is enhanced community collaboration and greater food production independence in the village.
On the economic front, Pusaka Dana focuses on boosting community incomes through cost efficiencies and new revenue sources. The use of organic fertilisers and solar energy reduces operational costs, while waste processing, livestock, and fisheries open business opportunities. The programme also empowers women through the development of food-based SMEs.
Pertagas Corporate Secretary Sulthani Adil Mangatur explained that all programmes are designed based on social mapping involving communities and stakeholders. Planning occurs through joint discussions, followed by sustainable implementation with regular monitoring and evaluation. This approach ensures the programmes are on target and can evolve according to local potential.
Through its various programmes, PT Pertamina Gas Operation South Sumatera Area (OSSA), or Pertagas OSSA, successfully earned a Gold ranking award from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) in the 2025 Company Performance Rating Programme (PROPER). PROPER Gold is the highest accolade given to companies with outstanding performance in environment, sustainability, and social responsibility.
The award was presented directly by the Minister of Environment and Forestry (KLHK)/Head of the Environment and Forestry Management Agency Hanif Faisol Nurofiq to company representatives at the PROPER Environmental Awards event in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), Jakarta, on 7 April 2026.
This success stems from the company’s commitment to the environment, manifested through various innovations. The MOAL programme promotes energy efficiency in gas distribution, while the SUATCONE 2.0 innovation improves water usage efficiency in cooling systems. Additionally, Pertagas OSSA implements a comprehensive Environmental Management System, from planning to evaluation.
These implementations yield positive impacts, such as applying the 3R principles, enhancing biodiversity, and pursuing sustainability in energy efficiency, emission reductions, and improved waste management.
Regarding the PROPER Gold, Sulthani explained that they successfully implemented sustainable community empowerment programmes that are targeted and deliver real impacts, through structured stages from mapping and planning to implementation, monitoring, and periodic evaluation. Moreover, Pertagas OSSA actively builds strong collaborations with communities and stakeholders, including village governments and experts, to drive joint progress and create local heroes who can lead in their environments.
“(The company) conducts measurable impact evaluations of programmes through SROI (Social Return on Investment) and the Community Satisfaction Index (IKM). Ensuring full compliance with environmental management regulations as the main foundation, from Environmental Approvals to monitoring and environmental management obligations,” he clarified.
He continued that Pertagas OSSA also operates an Environmental Management System encompassing policies, planning, implementation, audits, and management reviews, while demonstrating real impacts such as increased biodiversity and 3R principle application to waste. The company consistently prioritises innovations in energy efficiency, emission reductions, water efficiency, reduced water pollution loads, reduction and utilisation of hazardous waste, and structured, measurable reduction of non-hazardous waste.
Looking ahead, Pertagas OSSA hopes communities will become increasingly independent and not reliant on the company. Existing programmes are expected to be expanded and replicated in other areas, broadening their benefits.
