Mount Anak Krakatau continues to erupt. The volcano has undergone morphological changes since the 2018 eruption.

These morphological changes were shared on the Instagram account of the Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, on Tuesday (8/9/2026). The volcano’s appearance was depicted through illustrations of its morphology in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2024.

The images show the mountain’s body changing from year to year. There has been growth of the volcanic body since the eruption of 22 December 2018.

As is known, Mount Anak Krakatau erupted on 22 December 2018. That eruption caused the flank of the volcano to collapse and triggered a tsunami.

The Geological Agency confirmed that the newly reformed volcanic body remains relatively small. It does not currently present a risk of a collapse that could trigger a tsunami.

“Based on evaluations conducted to date, the growth of Mount Anak Krakatau’s newly reformed body following the 22 December 2018 eruption remains relatively small and does not have the potential to undergo a collapse on a scale that could trigger a tsunami,” the Geological Agency wrote in its statement accompanying the post.

The Geological Agency continues to monitor these morphological changes intensively. To date, Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III, or Alert status.

“Nevertheless, its activity and morphological developments continue to be monitored intensively. As of now, the activity status of Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III (Alert),” it continued.

17-Second Eruption

Earlier, Mount Anak Krakatau erupted again at midday. The eruption was recorded for 17 seconds.

According to the website of the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the eruption occurred at 11.34 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Tuesday (8 September 2026). It was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 55 mm.

“An eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau occurred on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, at 11.34 WIB,” PVMBG wrote.

The height of the eruption column was not observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 50 mm and a duration of 17 seconds.
