BRIN researcher Dewi Fortuna Anwar says mediators in the Middle East conflict should press the United States and Israel to stop their aggression. Speaking in Jakarta on Friday, she urged mediators to talk with Washington, arguing that Iran’s retaliatory strikes are a response to US-Israeli military action on February 28. ‘If you want to mediate, you should address America to halt the attack, not Tehran, which is defending itself,’ she said.

Anwar noted that neighbouring countries are in a difficult position: Iran’s moves are seen by some as violations of sovereignty, but Tehran frames them as self-defence against a host country for US forces. She urged mediation with the US, contending that Washington’s allies — particularly the states allied to Israel — are best placed to speak with the US. ‘America can leave, but neighbours cannot,’ she added.

Earlier on Saturday, February 28, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said Jakarta stands ready to facilitate dialogue to restore security and stability in the Middle East, and that President Prabowo Subianto would travel to Tehran to mediate if both sides agree.

The article notes that the attack occurred even after Geneva talks between Washington and Tehran, mediated by Oman, on Iran’s nuclear issue. Trump claimed the operation was to protect Americans by removing a threat associated with Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons development.
