This Eye-Catching Patterned Shirt Makes Its Wearer Invisible to AI Detection
AI, today’s most advanced technology, can apparently be fooled. A designer from Germany has succeeded in ‘outsmarting’ AI, making it possible for a person to evade surveillance cameras.
The designer, named Simon Weckert, created a colourful camouflage shirt in a style he calls Digital Camouflage. It features a combination of bright colours and patterns designed to confuse the system.
“It is about the colour or pattern together, not either one alone — it is about the interaction of the two, optimised for machines rather than the human eye,” he explained, quoted by Dezeen on Monday (7/9/2026).
The design, he explained, creates a system that renders a person invisible. The pattern produced cannot be read by AI systems.
“Saturated colour transitions appear in the early layers of the network, whilst overlapping shapes break the continuity of the body’s outline, so the detector can no longer piece the parts together into a single figure,” he said.
“The pattern defeats the statistical whisper that says ‘person’. To a human, the pattern reads as hypnotic textiles. To AI, the pattern is completely unreadable,” Weckert added.
To beat the AI system, he nevertheless relied on other AI technology. Testing of various iterations was carried out using an AI-driven version of a method known as adversarial cycles.
The shirt was then tested using YOLO, an open-source system that detects objects for AI in real time.
