This Airline Bans Passengers from Playing Music Without Headphones Onboard
United Airlines has updated its flight rules with a new, stricter policy. Passengers who play audio or video on personal devices without using headphones may face sanctions, including being barred from flying. According to The Washington Post, the airline now requires passengers to use headphones when listening to audio or video content during a flight. The rule is not merely a recommendation but has been incorporated into the airline’s contract of carriage. In the document, the airline states that passengers who do not use headphones when playing audio or video may be grounds for the airline to refuse to board those passengers. The new rule was added on 27 February 2026. With this policy, United Airlines has become one of the largest United States carriers to formally enshrine the obligation to use headphones within its flight rules. Previously, many airlines encouraged the use of headphones to protect the comfort of other passengers. The airline added that the rule aligns with many passenger experiences of being disturbed when someone plays video or music at high volume in the cabin. Moreover, the policy is seen as helping to maintain collective comfort during the flight. The move also relates to the rising use of internet on aircraft. With faster Wi‑Fi connections, activities such as streaming video or video calls become more feasible during flights, so the use of headphones is considered important to maintain cabin quiet.
