Thirty Central Java prisoners granted remission for Senior Citizens Day
Criteria include being over 70 years old, good behaviour, active participation in rehabilitation programs, suffering from chronic illness, and demonstrating reduced risk levels. Semarang (ANTARA) — The Central Java Regional Directorate General of Corrections has recorded 30 elderly prisoners receiving sentence reductions in commemoration of Senior Citizens Day 2026. Mardi Santoso, Chief of the Central Java Regional Directorate General of Corrections, stated in Semarang on Friday that the remission demonstrates the state’s care for elderly inmates, prioritising humanitarian principles and rehabilitation. He added that the recipients had met several administrative and substantive criteria. The elderly prisoners granted remission, he continued, are spread across seven prisons and correctional facilities in Central Java. ‘This remission honours inmates, particularly elderly prisoners who have demonstrated behavioural changes during their sentences,’ he said. National Senior Citizens Day is observed annually on 29 May. Nationally, the Directorate General of Corrections under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights recorded 560 elderly prisoners receiving sentence reductions in commemoration of Senior Citizens Day 2026.
