Thieves Steal Rp 142 Billion in Crypto, Victim Held at Gunpoint for 8 Hours

A horrific robbery occurred at a family’s home in Minnesota, United States, in September 2025. The victims were held captive and threatened with weapons for more than eight hours by perpetrators who stole over US$8 million (Rp 142 billion) in cryptocurrency.

The perpetrators were two brothers from Texas, Isiah Angelo Garcia (25) and Raymond Christian Garcia (24). They forced the victims to provide access to cryptocurrency accounts by binding them with ropes.

One victim was taken by Isiah to retrieve a cryptocurrency storage device at a family cabin in northern Minnesota. Prosecutors added that the victim was also forced to transfer funds from their account.

The terrifying ordeal ended after the victims’ son called 911. The two perpetrators attempted to flee but were later arrested in the Houston area. Investigators tracked them down using items found at the brothers’ residence to identify them before making the arrest.

The two defendants admitted to using firearms and agreed to pay restitution of more than US$8 million, according to The Block on Monday (22/6/2026). They also face up to 20 years in prison, though a sentencing date has not yet been set.

Crypto-related robberies have occurred on several occasions. In a separate incident, a Florida man carried out a carjacking and kidnapping involving bitcoin. Authorities in France have also uncovered crimes referred to as ‘wrench attacks’, with dozens of people charged for such offences this year.
