Thieves kill security guard, escape with cars
JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta police detectives have found one of two luxury cars, stolen by seven armed robbers from the home of Anton Budiman in Kebayoran Lama. Anton's security guard, Musa, was killed during the robbery.
Chief of violence and crime unit First. Lt. Sandi Nugroho said the early Thursday morning robbery, in which suspects left Musa, 50, lying dead in the garden, and a driver, Suradi, 50, unconscious, could be solved quickly.
"The robbery occurred at about 3 a.m. We received a call on Thursday morning from a resident, who heard about the robbery and called to report a Mercedes parked in their area in Ciputat," Sandi told The Jakarta Post.
"I went with a few officers to the area, which we entered from behind the Ciputat market. We found the car and checked it out."
"A woman came outside and we questioned her. She told us her husband had not arrived. So, we waited."
Musa was struck with a machete by the robbers at about 3 a.m. His face was bound with a cloth before the robbers left Anton's residence on Jl. Nikel No. 38, Grogol Utara, in Kebayoran Lama.
Sandi said, Suradi seemed to have been hit on his head with a blunt object, rendering him unconscious.
The robbers made away with Anton's Mercedes and Nissan Terrano.
According to a witness, whom Sandi refused to name, the robbers arrived at Anton's house during the rains.
"Four of the seven, entered the house, while three waited outside, inside a Kijang van they were using," Sandi said.
Hendra, who guards the house, said that he usually holds the house keys, but was not aware who held the keys to the garage.
"When the suspects tied the victim up and hit him, Pak Anton and his four maids got up after hearing strange sounds in the garden. When they investigated, they found the garage empty and Suradi lying in the garage, unconscious," Hendra said.
"Meanwhile, Musa was found dead."
In an unrelated incident, Petukangan Utara residents of Kebayoran Lama beat up and burned to death a motorcycle thief, identified as Ismail, 23, at 12 p.m. on Wednesday.
The police report said Ismail was attempting to steal a motorcycle from the home of Mrs. Suryati, who was out visiting a relative.
The thief was trying to steal Suryati's Honda Astrea motorcycle from her home on Jl. Mukhtar Raya, when Suryati returned and saw the theft.
She chased the thief and jumped on a passing ojek (motorcycle taxi) to catch up. Passersby on the road heard her cries for help and captured the thief. They beat Ismail badly and poured gasoline over him. He was burned to death. (ylt)
