These Rupiah Denominations Are No Longer Valid, Exchange Before They Expire

A number of rupiah denominations have been declared no longer valid as legal tender. Members of the public still holding these denominations are urged to exchange them before the specified deadline expires. If the deadline passes, the old currency will be forfeited and can no longer be exchanged for new denominations.

Under Bank Indonesia regulations, the revocation and withdrawal of rupiah currency is carried out periodically. This is typically done to maintain the quality of money in circulation and to anticipate developments in security technology for both paper and metal money.

For those who find these old denominations in a wallet, piggy bank, or safe, do not panic. Exchange can still be carried out by visiting a Bank Indonesia office. Exchange of withdrawn currency can be done at BI’s head office or representative offices throughout Indonesia. Ensure the physical condition of the money still allows its authenticity features to be recognised. Severely damaged or water-damaged notes risk being rejected. Bring an identity card or other official identification as a standard banking procedure.

For metal rupiah coins, if the physical condition is greater than half of the original size and the authenticity features can be recognised, a replacement equal to the nominal value will be provided. If the physical condition is equal to or less than half of the original size, no replacement will be given.

The list of revoked rupiah currency includes the Rp 100 (1984 emission), Rp 10,000 (1985), Rp 5,000 (1986), Rp 1,000 (1987), and Rp 500 (1988) banknotes, all revoked on 25 September 1995, with exchange available at the Bank Indonesia Head Office in Jakarta until 24 September 2028. The Rp 0.05, Rp 0.10, Rp 0.25, and Rp 0.50 ‘Dwikora’ notes from 1964, along with Rp 2 (1970), Rp 10 (1971), Rp 10 (1974), and Rp 10 (1979) coins, were revoked on 15 November 1996 and can be exchanged until 14 November 2029. Various special commemorative coins from the ‘25 Years of Indonesian Independence’ series (1970) and the ‘Nature Reserve’ series (1974) were revoked on 30 August 2021 and can be exchanged until 29 August 2031.
