REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Choosing a university major nowadays can no longer be based solely on trends or friends’ advice. For parents, this decision is a long-term investment in their child’s future. The question is simple yet crucial: what majors will be most needed in the next five years?

Amid the acceleration of digital transformation, the answers are becoming increasingly clear. The world of work is changing far more rapidly than traditional education curricula. If one is not careful in choosing a major, fresh graduates may struggle to compete even before truly starting their careers.

Digital Transformation Reshapes Career Landscape

Indonesia is currently experiencing very rapid growth in the digital economy. The e-Conomy SEA report from Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company indicates that Indonesia’s digital economy is projected to become the largest in Southeast Asia in the coming years.

Sectors such as financial technology (fintech), digital banking, e-commerce, and artificial intelligence (AI) are the main drivers of this growth. This situation is also changing the demand for labour.

Companies now not only seek graduates in conventional management or accounting. They require talents who understand digital technology while being able to develop technology-based solutions.

Several fields that are increasingly in demand by industry include financial technology or fintech, data science and big data, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital business.

Generation Z and the Digital Ecosystem

Another interesting fact comes from data by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), showing that the majority of internet users in Indonesia come from young age groups.

Generation Z has grown up with digital technologies such as smartphones, mobile banking, e-wallets, and online investments. Even the Financial Services Authority (OJK) report shows that the number of young investors in the capital market has been increasing in recent years.

This proves that the current generation is not only users of technology but also part of the digital economy ecosystem.

However, digital habits alone are not enough. Without the right formal education, that great potential may not develop optimally. Therefore, choosing a campus with a curriculum relevant to digital industry needs is a very important step.
