The Indonesian Mining Experts Association (Perhapi) views commodity certifications such as the Copper Mark as an important element, particularly in the implementation of good mining governance, especially in the copper industry.

Perhapi’s chairman Sudirman Widhy Hartono considers the Copper Mark certification important to ensure that copper production processes meet high environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

“Commodity certifications such as Copper Mark for copper are important in implementing good mining governance. This is because such certification ensures that copper production meets high environmental, social, and governance standards,” Widhy told CNBC Indonesia on Monday (16 March 2026).

According to Widhy, with the Copper Mark in place, copper mining companies are required to meet strict criteria, including how companies reduce environmental impact, respect human rights, enhance transparency and accountability, and implement responsible mining practices.

This certification also helps increase the trust of consumers, investors, and communities towards the copper mining industry. Additionally, the certification helps companies improve their reputation and reduce operational risks.

In Indonesia, he stated, the implementation of certifications such as the Copper Mark can be an important instrument to improve the quality of mining governance whilst promoting the mining sector’s contribution to sustainable development.

“Furthermore, the Copper Mark certification is very important, particularly in several aspects: sustainability, transparency, and global market acceptance whilst enhancing competitiveness,” he said.

By obtaining the Copper Mark certification, mining companies in Indonesia can demonstrate their commitment to responsible mining practices, thereby enhancing their reputation and stakeholder trust.

“In Indonesia, not many copper mining companies have obtained the Copper Mark certification. To our knowledge, PT Freeport Indonesia is among those that have obtained it,” he stated.

As is known, the Copper Mark is an international certification framework in the mining industry that aims to ensure the production of metals, particularly copper, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc, is conducted responsibly from environmental, social, and governance (ESG) perspectives.

Established in 2019 in the United Kingdom by the International Copper Association, mining operations must pass an independent assessment against 33 criteria to obtain the Copper Mark certification.
