North Maluku Provincial Government is preparing integrated educational facilities through the construction of Sekolah Rakyat (SR), designed as boarding schools for primary through senior secondary levels. The project is built to expand access to education, particularly for children from low-income families in the archipelago. Governor Sherly Tjoanda said the SR is part of the provincial government’s efforts to widen access to education for the disadvantaged. ‘SR is the hope for North Maluku’s children, especially those from low-income families. I hope the project can be completed on time while maintaining quality. Stay motivated and prioritise workplace safety,’ she said, quoted from a press release on Friday (6 March 2026). The choice of two locations aims to reach areas with high demand for education services and to promote equitable development of human resources in North Maluku. The school is conceived as an integrated educational facility with a boarding school concept for primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary levels. The facilities include separate dormitories for male and female students, staff housing blocks, utility buildings, and sports facilities such as a football pitch with a running track, a basketball court, and a volleyball court. In addition, there will be a place of worship or mosque, a multipurpose hall, a kitchen and kitchen lab, a canteen, and various other supporting facilities. On the learning side, the school will be equipped with technology-based classrooms, skills laboratories and workshop spaces, and a library. There will also be a digital learning centre, an extracurricular activities centre, and green spaces and a school garden as part of an environment-based learning approach. Building designs also take sustainability, energy efficiency, and adaptability into account to ensure the learning environment remains conducive in the long term. Construction work is targeted to finish on schedule so it can be used at the start of the 2026/2027 academic year. Currently, progress is at the lower structural stage in each building mass.
