These Are the Main Challenges in Converting Motorcycles to Electric

JAKARTA – Behind the increasingly prevalent discourse on converting petrol motorcycles to electric ones, there are non-trivial technical challenges, especially in installing the main components on the vehicle frame.

One of the most crucial aspects is the custom mounting process or adjusting the mounts for electric components on motorcycles previously designed for fuel-powered engines.

According to Wahyu Budhi, Training Analyst and Technical Analyst at PT Wahana Makmur Sejati (WMS), every motorcycle has a different frame design, so there is no single standard mount that can be used for all vehicle types.

He explained that the custom mounting process is not just about fitting components into the frame, but also must consider aspects of load distribution, vehicle balance, and safety when used on the road.

The installation of the battery, for example, must be done with great precision. An incorrect position can affect the vehicle’s centre of gravity, which ultimately impacts stability while riding, especially at high speeds or when manoeuvring.

In addition, the electric motor mount must be able to withstand vibrations and the torque load produced. If not designed well, the risk of damage to the frame or components can increase.

Wahyu added that the custom mounting process also affects the conversion time and cost. The more complex the frame design, the greater the effort required to adjust the component mounts.

Previously, this conversion discourse was driven by the government in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles. President Prabowo Subianto previously emphasised the importance of strengthening the electric vehicle ecosystem, including the readiness of workshops and competent human resources.
