These Are Some Benefits If Ride-Hailing Services Use Electric Vehicles
Electrification of two-wheeled vehicles in the online motorcycle taxi and logistics sectors is considered the most rational step to reduce the burden of fuel subsidies while strengthening national energy resilience. “If we assume there are around 7 million drivers, consumption could reach 35-70 million litres per day. In a year, that equates to around 12.7-25.5 billion litres of fuel,” said Abra Talattov, Head of the Center of Food, Energy and Sustainable Development at the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance, in his statement in Jakarta on Friday (26/3/2026). According to Abra, the online motorcycle taxi and logistics sectors are the most effective targets because they have high and consistent daily fuel consumption. He estimates that an average online motorcycle taxi driver consumes around 5-10 litres of fuel per day. With such consumption figures, he believes that shifting part of the use from fossil fuel vehicles to electric motorcycles will have a significant impact on energy subsidy savings. In fact, if only 20-30% of drivers switch to electric motorcycles, the potential fuel savings is estimated to reach 2.5-7.5 billion litres per year. He stated that, assuming an average subsidy of around Rp1,500 to Rp2,000 per litre, the potential fiscal savings could reach Rp3.7 to Rp15 trillion per year. “This is a very significant figure to start reducing pressure on the state budget,” he explained.
