The World's Oldest Water Turns Out Not to Be Drinkable, Here's Why

A study has identified the oldest water on Earth. It was found in Ontario, Canada, and researchers say it formed under ancient atmospheric conditions. Researchers conducted analyses using Xenon and other noble gases. These inert gases do not react with other elements, making them reliable data tracers. “Using isotopic signatures of water—specifically noble gases—we can quantitatively determine whether the water contains modern components. And none of the samples did, so the water appears to be isolated from the modern water cycle,” said Barbara Sherwood Lollar, a geologist at the University of Toronto, quoted by IFL Science on Tuesday (3 March 2026). Diperkirakan air tersebut berusia 1,5 miliar tahun berdasarkan penelitian awal. Dia mengatakan tanpa meminumnya bisa merasakan rasa air itu, yakni pahit dan asin saat dipercikan ke wajahnya. “Unfortunately, ‘and someone drank that water’ is a media fabrication.
