OpenAI has described Anthropic, its main rival, as a company with limited growth opportunities and resources. In a letter to investors quoted by CNBC International, OpenAI stated that Anthropic is expected to increase its “computing power” to only 7-8 GW by 2027, far smaller than OpenAI’s plan for 30 GW by 2030. “Even at the highest level of that range, our foundation is ahead and the gap is widening,” OpenAI said. The popularity of Anthropic, the creator of the Claude chatbot, is beginning to rival OpenAI, which has long been the leader with its ChatGPT. The valuations of both companies are estimated to exceed US$1 trillion, and both are planning IPOs this year. However, they still need to work hard to convince investors of their ability to compete with deep-pocketed tech giants like Google and Meta, which are also developing their own AI technologies. Anthropic’s founder is Dario Amodei, a former OpenAI employee. Amodei founded Anthropic in 2021 after leaving along with several other AI researchers from OpenAI. Anthropic, which has an advantage over OpenAI as a provider of technology to corporations, recently launched a new AI model called Project Glasswing. Project Glasswing is part of the development of AI-based cybersecurity technology to counter AI attacks. In the letter to investors, OpenAI highlighted Amodei’s statements about Anthropic’s conservative resource-building strategy. “Each new generation of infrastructure allows us to train AI models with better capabilities. Better algorithms and hardware development reduce costs per token, lowering the cost per unit of intelligence,” OpenAI said. OpenAI stated that better infrastructure and models also reduce operational costs, thereby increasing the company’s revenue. “This advantage allows OpenAI to continue democratising AI by making our tools available to hundreds of millions of people for free,” OpenAI said.
