The Virtues of Hajj: Equivalent to Jihad and Erasing Sins

Hajj is not merely a spiritual journey to the Holy Land but also carries immense virtues in the sight of Allah SWT. Several hadiths state that the reward of a mabrur Hajj is equivalent to jihad fi sabilillah, a practice known for its difficulty and sacrifice. This virtue brings glad tidings to Muslims, especially women, the elderly, and those unable to participate in battlefield jihad.

Kyai Ahmad Sarwat explains in his book ‘Hajj Worship: The Fifth Pillar of Islam’ published by Rumah Fiqih that jihad fi sabilillah is one of the most exceptional and highly rewarded acts of worship. It is understandable that those who undertake jihad receive great blessings and rewards given its arduous nature.

Beyond leaving one’s homeland and being separated from children and spouse, jihad requires physical strength, skills, and, most importantly, substantial financial resources.

Consequently, many companions of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) wept when told they were unfit for jihad. Among those deeply disappointed for lacking the necessary qualifications were the female companions.
