Leaders with integrity will not sacrifice the environment for short-term interests.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Amidst the increasing threats of climate change, environmental destruction, and global uncertainty, the nation is facing challenges far greater than mere economic and political issues. Indonesia is being tested on how to determine the future direction of development: whether to continue pursuing limitless growth at the expense of the environment, or to begin building a new civilisation based on sustainability, justice, and responsibility towards future generations.

The momentum of World Environment Day on 5 June serves as an important reminder that the nation’s future is determined not only by economic and technological strength but also by the quality of leadership. Good leaders must be able to educate the public that littering, wasting energy, destroying forests, or polluting rivers are not just minor infractions, but threats to the future of the next generation. Ecological awareness must become a national culture, starting from families, schools, universities, the business world, and government institutions.

Furthermore, environmental education must be directed towards building a new mindset that the economy and the environment are not contradictory. In fact, the economy of the future is a green economy based on innovation, energy efficiency, clean energy, and the sustainable use of resources.

Secondly, leadership must be able to provide ‘empowering leadership’, which empowers the community to be part of the solution. Environmental challenges cannot be solved through formal policies alone without strong public participation. Leaders with integrity…
