The Uniqueness of Depok Sleman: One District with Three Police Sectors
The Depok sub-district in Sleman Regency possesses a unique feature compared to other areas. While typically one sub-district has only one police sector (polsek), Depok has three polseks simultaneously.
The three polseks located in Depok sub-district are Polsek Depok Barat, Polsek Depok Timur, and Polsek Bulaksumur.
The Head of Depok, Djoko Muljanto, stated that the existence of these three polseks is inseparable from the character of the Depok area, which has a community with relatively high activities.
“This Depok area is indeed very dynamic. There are many educational, economic, and migrant settlement activities, so security apparatus support is also greater,” said Djoko when contacted by detikJogja on Friday (6/3/2026).
Djoko explained that Depok is one of the rapidly developing areas in Sleman. This region consists of three villages: Caturtunggal, Maguwoharjo, and Condongcatur, with dozens of hamlets and a fairly large population.
Administratively, Depok sub-district has 58 hamlets, 215 neighbourhood associations, and 648 community groups with a population of more than 125,000 souls.
According to Djoko, this condition makes coordination with security apparatus an important matter to keep the regional situation conducive.
“Because community activities are high, coordination with the police and other security elements is continuously carried out to keep the situation safe and orderly,” he said.
Explanation from Polda DIY
Meanwhile, the Head of Public Relations of Polda DIY, Commissioner Ihsan, explained that the existence of three polseks in the Depok area has been ongoing since 9 September 2005.
“The Depok sub-district area has had three Polseks since 9 September 2005, namely Polsek Depok Barat, Polsek Depok Timur, and Polsek Bulaksumur,” said Ihsan in a written statement on Friday (13/3/2026).
He stated that this policy was taken because the character of the Depok area differs from other sub-districts in Sleman.
According to Ihsan, Depok is the main urban area in Sleman that directly borders the city of Yogyakarta, so the population density and community mobility are very high.
In addition, this area is also the largest education centre in Yogyakarta because it hosts several major universities such as UGM, UNY, Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University, and UPN Veteran Jogja.
“The presence of these universities makes community activities run almost 24 hours with high vehicle mobility and certain vulnerability potentials,” he said.
On the other hand, Depok has also developed as an economic, tourism, and entertainment centre in Sleman. Several areas such as Seturan, Gejayan, Babarsari, to Plaza Ambarrukmo have become bustling economic and business activity centres.
“The crowdedness and high mobility require more intensive security supervision,” he said.
Ihsan added that the existence of three polseks is also related to the character of the areas in the three villages in Depok.
Caturtunggal is known as a campus and student boarding area, Condongcatur as a business and culinary centre. Meanwhile, Maguwoharjo is dominated by residential areas.
With these different characters, the division of police areas is deemed necessary so that community security management can run more effectively.
“The existence of these three polseks also helps speed up police services, increase area supervision, and support crime prevention,” he explained.
Ihsan added that although it has three polseks, security control in Depok still requires a comprehensive community security and order strategy as well as community support.
“Thus, the existence of three Polseks can be said to help increase the effectiveness of crime control, although it must still be supported by a comprehensive community security and order strategy and community cooperation,” he concluded.
