JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Residents of Jalan Marunda Empang RT 07 RW 07, Marunda subdistrict, Cilincing district, North Jakarta, say the wild monkey that attacked a child and left the youngster seriously injured has been roaming the neighbourhood for nearly a week.

Local resident Badriah, 57, said the wild monkey first appeared in their area on Monday 18 May 2026.

‘It’s been wandering here for a week. It appeared for the first time on Monday (18 May 2026),’ she told Kompas.com on Thursday (21 May 2026).

She said the monkey has since been seen moving around the community almost daily. ‘It comes every day,’ she added.

Badriah said the wild animal is often seen on top of residents’ houses or among the trees surrounding the settlement. Even as of Thursday, the animal was still roaming and had not yet been captured. ‘Just now it was over there by the washing machine,’ she said.

Another resident, Neneng Nur Aeni, 40, said the presence of the wild monkey has increased residents’ anxiety as it has not been secured despite searches by residents and authorities.

‘From now until the monkey is caught, there should be extra guarding,’ Neneng told Kompas.com at the scene on Thursday.

Neneng also noted that the worsening unease is due to Marunda being a densely populated area with many children and toddlers who often play outdoors.

‘There are so many children here in Marunda. There are many toddlers,’ she said.

Earlier, a child identified by the initial M (9) sustained serious injuries after being attacked by the wild monkey on Jalan Marunda Empang RT 07 RW 07, Marunda, Cilincing district, North Jakarta, on Wednesday 20 May 2026. As a result, the victim required medical treatment with a total of 30 stitches due to bite wounds.
