The feature, named Apple Reference Image, will be available exclusively on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max series. Currently, AI-generated images are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from real photos. The system used by other companies involves attaching proof of origin to a photo after the capture process is complete. This method is vulnerable to manipulation because data can be altered before being tagged. Apple has designed its system differently:
When a photo is taken, the camera sensor immediately marks the image data cryptographically before any further processing. This data cannot be altered by the operating system or other applications.
The result is called a ‘secure digital negative’ which contains all the original information from the sensor, tagged with an accurate capture time down to the minute.
The images are then processed in a highly secure cloud environment, where even Apple itself cannot view the content.
In this way, every stage of the photo creation process can be verified without any loopholes that could be exploited to forge images.

This technology provides three simultaneous guarantees that have never existed in other mobile phones:
Proven authenticity: Because the images produced by this system can be proven to have been captured by the camera sensor at the stated time, rather than being the result of computer engineering. Every processing step can be openly verified.
Unforgeable: The system is designed to remain secure even if the device is compromised or the software is hacked. If forgery is detected, all outputs from that device can be deactivated entirely without revealing the owner’s identity. The digital signatures used are also prepared to remain secure against future quantum computing attacks.
Hidden identity: Unlike other systems that link photos to a name or device openly, Apple’s system does not reveal whether two photos originated from the same handset. Photographers can remain anonymous while still proving their photos are authentic.
How to Use the AI Detection Technology
Users simply need to activate ‘Reference mode’ in the camera application before taking a photo. The captured photo will include embedded proof of authenticity. When the photo is viewed on another device, the system will automatically check its validity. If valid, a verification mark will appear.
This feature is expected to become a new standard for news, event documentation, and evidence requiring public trust. It is only available on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max as it requires specialised sensor hardware not present in previous models.
