The Story of Nurdin and the Wheelchair That Transformed His Day
For Nurdin, the wheelchair is not merely an aid but a means to reconnect with the world around him. “I’m so happy; now every morning I can ask Mum to take me out of the house to breathe fresh air. I no longer just stay in the room,” he said in a written statement on Sunday (12/4/2026). A month after the aid distribution, the Ministry of Social Affairs through the Directorate General of Social Rehabilitation revisited Nurdin’s home to ensure the benefits of the assistance were truly felt. The aid in the form of an accessibility wheelchair and cash support of Rp1,200,000 has brought changes to Nurdin and his family’s life. His mother expressed gratitude for the government’s attention, as the assistance not only eases the economic burden but also impacts her child’s psychological condition and health. She explained that the cash aid was used to meet nutritional needs such as vitamins and special milk. “Since having this wheelchair, Nurdin has become more cheerful, his appetite has improved, and he’s no longer sullen,” she revealed. This visit also reinforces the Ministry of Social Affairs’ efforts that aid distribution does not stop at mere ceremonies. Monitoring is conducted to ensure every intervention has a real impact on improving the quality of life of beneficiaries. These efforts are also part of social rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities that not only focus on providing aid but also include fulfilling basic needs, care support, improving social functions, and strengthening the family’s role as the primary support system. Through this approach, the Ministry of Social Affairs encourages beneficiaries to live their daily lives more independently and with dignity. Through the ongoing social rehabilitation programme, the Ministry of Social Affairs continues to optimise the realisation of an inclusive society. In this regard, every citizen, including persons with disabilities, has equal opportunities to live more independently and prosperously.
