Behind the hustle and bustle of modern economic development, local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) remain the backbone that sustains the community’s economy. This real story comes from Bugel, Salatiga, about how tradition, a keen eye for opportunity, and a sense of kinship intertwine to keep the stoves of enterprise burning.
The aroma of freshly baked bread fills the production room. In another corner of the Bugel sub-district, piles of freshly fried crackers are ready for distribution to various regions. Meanwhile, sheet after sheet of batik fabric is crafted with meticulous care, and in a farm shop, shelves containing fertiliser, seeds, and agricultural equipment are neatly arranged to meet the needs of farmers. These activities are part of the daily lives of MSME players.
Behind the products that reach consumers lies a long journey that is not always easy. Every business has a story about how opportunities were discovered, challenges were faced, and innovations were continuously made to survive. These stories were revealed through a work programme focusing on mapping local economic potential, involving observation and interviews with a number of MSME players during the Universitas Gadjah Mada Community Empowerment Learning Real Work Lecture (KKN-PPM UGM) in Bugel. From this process, it became apparent that each MSME has different characteristics but is united by the same spirit: to keep enduring and growing amidst various challenges.
One business that has successfully maintained its existence is a cracker business established in 1989. Starting from seeing an opportunity when similar products were still rarely produced in the surrounding area, this cracker business now markets its products to various regions, such as Salatiga, Semarang Regency, and even Magelang. Although the production process still largely relies on traditional methods, product quality remains the top priority to maintain customer trust.
In the bakery sector, the emerging story is no less interesting. Several business players continue to innovate to keep up with evolving consumer tastes. New products are developed periodically, training is undertaken to improve skills, and even simple research is conducted before launching new variants. For them, innovation is not just about following trends, but a strategy to maintain business continuity.
Changing times have also encouraged MSME players to adapt to digital technology. Social media is utilised as a means of promotion as well as communication with customers. The presence of digital platforms opens wider opportunities for MSMEs to introduce their products to the public without being limited by location. This adaptation shows that local businesses can also keep up with technological developments without abandoning the product quality that has become their hallmark.
Interestingly, some business players have also started implementing more environmentally friendly practices. Production waste is not entirely discarded but is reused, for example, as fertiliser or animal feed.
