The Story of a Farm Labourer Who Now Regularly Performs the Eid al-Adha Sacrifice
Suratman (42) understands that animal sacrifice during Eid al-Adha is a highly encouraged practice in Islam. However, until the age of 37 in 2021, he had never sacrificed an animal. At that time, he felt he did not have the means to provide a sacrificial animal for slaughter. His income as a farm labourer in Seputih Raman sub-district, Central Lampung, was modest.
The opportunity to gain additional income and assets came to him in 2021. He, who had previously joined the Barokah Mindo group, which has 10 members, joined the Yufeed Berkah Mulia cooperative. In this cooperative, there are four groups, including Suratman’s group.
The cooperative had been entrusted with managing a livestock assistance programme from Badan Amil Zakat Nasional (Baznas) since 2019. Each member was given four breeding goats to rear. Since 2021, Suratman has had an additional job besides being a farm labourer, namely as a breeder.
Through guidance from the cooperative in collaboration with Baznas, Suratman succeeded in breeding his goats. By 2026, he owned 50 goats, 27 of which have been sold in the past four years. Moreover, he now routinely sacrifices his own goats during Eid al-Adha.
