The Story Behind Chery Q's Name: Dropping the Chery QQ Name

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.COM – Chery has explained the reason behind using the Chery Q name for the Indonesian market. Globally, this compact electric car is known as the Chery QQ3 EV, but for the domestic market its name was made simpler. Zeng Shuo, President Director of Chery Group Indonesia, said the simplification was done to make it easier to remember and to align with the car’s character and its target consumers. ‘So (Chery Q) is simpler, easier. So we simply keep it simple, like the spirit of Generation Q. So we call it Chery Q, easier and cuter,’ said Zeng Shuo in Jakarta on 18 May 2026. At that time, Chery QQ was known as a city car with a petrol engine of 800 cc three-cylinder or 1,100 cc four-cylinder DOHC. In Indonesia, the car is introduced as Chery Q with its positioning as a compact electric SUV with urban styling for the younger generation. The electric vehicle uses a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) system with motor power of up to 121 hp and torque of 115 Nm. The dimensions are claimed to provide rear passenger legroom of 977 mm, giving a cabin that is more spacious for a compact electric car.
