The stakes behind Theys' murder case

The police have now unveiled a part of their version on the mystery surrounding the murder of Papuan pro-independence leader Theys Hiyo Eluay. Seriously enough they have connected the case to the special forces (Kopassus). This allegation certainly concerns the reputation of the elite unit that is the pride of the country. If Kopassus members are actually involved, a thorough investigation is then called for. The next question is whether a higher military command is also involved as the seven soldiers -- if without orders -- have committed a daring high- risk action. From the start it was very clear that the death of Theys could spur the rage of Papuans.

If this case is not properly solved, the death of Theys will deepen dissatisfaction among Papuans. Such dissatisfaction can thicken their desire for freedom. If that is the case, we can then only wait for the moment that Papua becomes separated from Indonesia.
