The Donald Trump administration is reportedly set to impose import tariffs on semiconductors, with the scope becoming broader and no longer limited to chips alone.

A Politico report cited by Reuters stated that the tariffs would be applied to products that use the affected chips, from laptops and consoles to data centre servers.

According to the same report, the US government is considering a transition period for the new tariffs to be introduced gradually.

However, this policy could still change. Reports suggest changes could come in the next few weeks or months.

An official said Trump’s goal is to bring manufacturing back to the United States. A number of approaches are being taken to encourage investment.

“The government has implemented an agile, careful, and diverse approach to encourage trillions of dollars in investment in key sectors,” a White House official said in a statement.

Even so, he did not confirm the circulating reports.

According to him, information regarding tariffs is considered speculation, unless there has been an official announcement from the US government.

Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in May that there were no plans to impose new tariffs on semiconductors.

However, he also stressed the importance of protecting the semiconductor sector through import duties, as this could facilitate the return of chip production to the domestic market.
