The reasons why Xi Jinping is confident China and the US can prosper together
Beijing (ANTARA) - In the eyes of Chinese President Xi Jinping, “all living beings can thrive side by side without harming one another, and different paths can run in harmony without interfering with each other.”
The Chinese leader has previously quoted this ancient proverb to illustrate that lasting prosperity and security can only be achieved when nations pursue common interests, live in harmony, and engage in mutually beneficial cooperation. For Xi, there is vast room for China-US cooperation, and both parties are fully capable of helping to drive mutual success and achieve win-win outcomes.
During a welcoming banquet at the Great Hall of the People on Thursday (14/5), held in honour of US President Donald Trump’s visit, Xi stated that looking back at the trajectory of China-US relations, the ability of both nations to respect one another, coexist peacefully, and engage in mutually beneficial cooperation is the key to the stability of their developing relationship.
This year marks the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), while the US celebrates its 250th anniversary. On Friday (15/5), during a closed-door meeting at the Zhongnanhai leadership complex in central Beijing, Xi told Trump, “While President Trump hopes to make America great again, I am dedicated to leading the Chinese people towards national rejuvenation.”
Amidst unprecedented global transformation, China and the US are also expected to cooperate in addressing urgent global challenges, a sentiment echoed by Xi. When meeting former US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Beijing in 2024, Xi cited another concept drawn from traditional Chinese philosophy of harmony: “Passengers in the same boat must help one another.”
“Currently, I believe, the inhabitants of the same planet must also help one another,” he said. As Xi has previously stated, “No individual or nation can remain isolated from the shared challenges we face. The only way forward is through solidarity and harmonious coexistence.”
In the recent Xi-Trump high-level meeting, both sides expressed readiness to increase exchanges across various sectors, including diplomacy, military affairs, economy and trade, health, agriculture, tourism, people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and law enforcement, providing new momentum for future interactions between the two nations. As Xi noted, the peoples of China and the US are both great nations. “The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the effort to make America great again can go hand in hand. We can help each other to succeed and advance the prosperity of the entire world,” said Xi.
