The Real 'Gondrong' in Tangerang: A Village with a Hairy Name

The word ‘Gondrong’ is usually associated with a hairstyle, but in Tangerang, it is something entirely different. It is the official name of a village.

Kelurahan Gondrong is located in Cipondoh District, Tangerang City, Banten. Far from being a jest, it is a legitimate administrative area with its own office.

detikcom visited the Gondrong Village office on Tuesday (4/8/2026). It is situated on Jalan Kihajar Dewantoro, Cipondoh, not far from Cengkareng, West Jakarta. The Village Head, Muhlis Cahyadi, explained that many newcomers reside in Gondrong and commute to work in Jakarta due to the easy access and proximity.

“Many newcomers have arrived here. On average, they work as civil servants, private sector employees, traders, and there are also those who still farm,” said Muhlis.

Muhlis also mentioned that there are local terms like ‘Gondrong Seberang’ and ‘Gondrong Udik’ within the area. He shared a couple of stories regarding the origin of the name Gondrong. One tale suggests the name emerged because the area was once lush and overgrown. Another story links it to a local figure who was known for having long, shaggy hair.

“The most common story circulating among the community is about a lush cingcalo guava tree, or a figure who used to travel around with long, shaggy hair,” he said.
