The price of negligence
The price of negligence
From Media Indonesia
The recent landslide at the Leuwigajah dump in Cimahi regency,
West Java, buried hundreds of houses and killed many people while
they were asleep.
Like the tsunami in Aceh that claimed hundreds of thousands of
lives, the Leuwigajah landslide had also been predicted. But for
reasons that are still not clear, the prediction was ignored by
the local administration and residents.
The disaster was likely to have been caused by the way garbage
was piled up at the location, with the weight of the waste too
great for the soil to sustain.
The question we must ask now, is why the Cimahi regency
administration did nothing about it. Regency officials are likely
to have pretended to be ignorant of the imminent disaster to
serve the interests of a handful of people.
