The 'Post' celebrates its 14th anniversary

JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Post celebrated its 14th anniversary with a cocktail party at the Jakarta Convention Center's Cendrawasih Room Friday evening.

Among the 800 guests were the minister of tourism, post and telecommunications, Joop Ave, the chairman of the national committee for sports affairs, Wismoyo Arismunandar, the director general of press and graphic affairs, Subrata, the armed forces' spokesman, Brig. Gen. Slamet Supriadi, ousted Indonesian Democratic Party chairwoman, Megawati Soekarnoputri, and former Jakarta governor Ali Sadikin.

Ambassadors Ribhi Y. Awad of Palestine, Mario Brando Pensa of Italy, E.A. Abaquin of the Philippines and Paul J. Dala of Papua New Guinea also attended.

Businessmen Ciputra, Sofjan Wanandi and Bambang Rachmadi were there as were economists M. Sadli, Marie Pangestu and Sjahrir. Other personalities were top model Okky Asokawati and her photographer husband, M. Firman Ichsan.

Under the theme of Where Trust is Everything, the standing party featured music by the Twilite Orchestra.

'Lifestyle'

After his welcoming speech, Jusuf Wanandi, president of PT Bina Media Tenggara which publishes the Post, launched the 1997 edition of The Jakarta Post Lifestyle.

The 316-page full-color book is the second edition and has been revised and updated. The book is a comprehensive guide with information on things like accommodation, entertainment and recreational activities.

Born on April 25, 1983, the Post has steadily expanded its circulation from 5,474 copies to just over 50,000 with 63 percent of its readers Indonesian and 37 percent foreigners.
