The Origin of the Gobel Name: From Sultanate Lineage to a Movement for Economic Empowerment
The Gobel family name, widely recognised through the late industrialist Rachmat Gobel, carries a dual heritage rooted in Gorontalo’s royal history and a national economic mission. Rachmat Gobel, who passed away on Friday (10/7/2026), was a direct descendant of Sultan Ibrahim Duawulu, also known as Raja Hubulo, a revered Islamic leader from the Bolango Sultanate in Gorontalo. The transformation of the family name from Hubulo to Gobel occurred during the Dutch colonial era, as colonial administrators struggled to pronounce the original name, eventually altering it to ‘Gobel’. Beyond its historical origins, the name was later redefined by Rachmat Gobel’s father, Thayeb Mohammad Gobel, the founder of the Panasonic Gobel Group. He turned the family name into an acronym for ‘Gerakan Organisasi Bina Ekonomi Lemah’ (Movement for the Organisation of Weak Economic Empowerment), embedding a philosophy of uplifting the economically disadvantaged into the identity of the family business.
