The new communications era we have to face
The new communications era we have to face
Indonesia is one of the biggest country to enter into a new
telecommunications era. We know that voice and data technology
increases rapidly. Now, the speed of technology develops quicker
than ever before. But we cannot forget that there is voice-to-
voice technology, that we still use today. Combining data packets
and voice is a new era in telecommunications that we will have to
face.
We will face a network without boundaries or limits; one
capable of providing voice, data and multimedia services
applications. We can imagine a network whose architecture is
based on standards and open interfaces, and provides the maximum
reuse of existing network components. A network has been building
components. Switching and networking solutions will provide you
the performance, flexibility and scalability to meet customers'
demands for example. A network that surpasses the expectations
and limitations of today's network architectures.
As the new millennium unfolds, services, providers are facing
a technological crossroad. Intense competition -- couple with the
explosive growth of data traffic -- is forcing a reevaluation of
existing network implementation. As a result, carriers are
searching for new ways to offer differentiated and profitable
voice, data and multimedia services, while offloading services
from overburdened network trunks originally designed to carry
voice only. And also, it becomes clear that the networks of the
21st century must inherently provide superior performance,
service differentiation and quality-of-service.
Convergence
Convergence is one of technology concepts which we can set in
our mind nowadays. Convergence changes the way we live and work.
It is part of what we do every day. The opportunities are
exhilarating, new approaches and new ways of succeeding at work
and at play. There are some new technologies introduce to the
world of convergence and help us make different technologies work
together seamlessly. There have been converged solutions over any
voice, data, and IP communication infrastructure. They bring
people closer without reference to time or space. In short,
convergence make our life easier.
Why is convergence needed? The digital trend where most people
desire to be connected to everything, all of the time, having
access to every type of information and having it everywhere.
The near reality that we can see is Internet technology,
including IP-based voice, data, images and sounds circle the
world.
Siemens is just one the telecommunications companies that can
help customers provide solutions to the new era in
communications.
Voice, data and IP are converging in both fixed and mobile
networks.
IP is dominating the next generation network. Internet traffic
will dominate the bandwidth resources of our networks.
Data application capabilities are converging with the mobile
GSM standard to the 3rd generation.
The number of wired telephone connections continues to expand,
fueling extraordinary growth rates for Internet accounts.
In addition, the coalescence of professional services and
applications, particularly voice integration in work-flow
processes, is now evident in virtually all business sectors.
New Era in Communication: SURPASS
The future is clear to see. As we move further into the 21st
century, our national and global economies will increasingly be
ruled by converge network and interconnectivity. The Surpass
convergence solution brings together IP and voice. SURPASS is a
new concept in networking that combines the voice features,
reliability, and quality of service of circuit switch networks
with the advantages and efficiencies of packet based networking.
Surpass is Voice-over-IP/ATM technology for the convergence of
voice data and data networks that is tailored to the needs of
carriers and service providers. Based on an open architecture, it
brings to data networks the high quality and voice-service
versatility of real-time voice networks.
Conversely, it also makes it possible to use IP applications
in the voice network. The evolutionary concept of Surpass
guarantees to secure the existing investment in the network
infrastructures.
SURPASS brings the worlds together to enable the creation of
the next generation networks with profitable and new
applications. The IP-based communication platform SURPASS
supports service and content provisioning. Additionally, we get
everything that is required for operations, network management
and billing systems as well as access servers and broadband
access.
SURPASS also addresses the needs of Internet service providers
(ISPs) seeking a foothold in the profitable market for voice
transmission. This will enable providers to offer, for instance,
Web applications enhanced with telephony functions.
The functionally of SURPASS includes an application
programming interface (API). This interface gives the system the
openness that characterized a flexible total solution. The API
thus enables third-party vendors to develop additional functions
such as E-Mail Waiting Indication or Call Waiting Internet Busy.
SURPASS provides for a phase migration to IP-based infrastructure
with timing and technicalities of the changeover being determined
by the requirements of the ISP or carrier.
Having an open IP architecture, SURPASS is able to incorporate
the existing network elements while leaving the choice of future
components to the customer. The modular system adapts to suit
customer's needs and technical situation so that the migration
can be managed on an individualized, evolutionary basis
consistent with operational requirements.
The superior design of SURPASS provides the means enabling
ISPs and carriers to respond rapidly to their competitive
environment. By changing over to IP-based structures with
SURPASS, customers can introduce innovative service and hence,
generate new sources of revenue.
The propriety age is thus drawing to a close and services are
now assuming the dominant role in network operations. For any
company that has e-business as a strategic aim, there is no
alternative to IP. Today, it is possible to build end-to-end IP-
based infrastructures without having to compromise.
The benefits to the community
End User
We (public telephone users) can receive phone calls while we
are browsing the Internet.
We can contact the Internet user by phone while they are
browsing the Internet.
Internet users can transfer data faster (high speed).
VoX Portal, user can listen to their e-mail.
Operators
For telecommunications' operators, EWSD Infrastructure as an
existing Platform. The operators can build on the existing EWSD
network and upgrade to end user needs by migrating toward service
convergence voice and data (smooth migration from existing
network).
New business opportunities for voice and data network
operator.
SURPASS extends operators voice business toward data networks
and allows them to better exploit networks resources.
Cost benefit, SURPASS provides cost-efficient voice and data
access for all operators subscribers. Comprehensive Management
system NetManager integrates operator communication equipment
with the latest IT infrastructure and supports all business
processes.
With EWSD and SURPASS, operators can enter the multimedia
world and create innovative convergence services quickly and
efficiently with open service interfaces.
SURPASS and EWSD is the most widely deployed switching system
in the world, form a solution set that can make the network a
reality. Both enable you to go beyond current switching and
networking limitations to meet the challenges of today and
realize the opportunities of tomorrow in voice data
communications.
The new technology paves the way into the IP and data world
and discovers our tremendous business opportunities via switching
and networking beyond limits. "We look forward to celebrating a
new era of convergence by creating a universe of one with finding
the best way to unite people, technology and business processes
all around the world. There are about 5,8 millions line EWSD
switch in Indonesia can support to run SUPRASS technology," says
Satya Heragandhi, Communication and Information Network Marketing
Manager of PT Siemens Indonesia.
