A sound resembling a ‘kuntilanak’ in the Jetis cemetery area, Bantul, caused a commotion. It was later discovered that the sound was actually the result of a prank by mischievous teenagers.

The news about the ‘kuntilanak’-like sound also went viral on social media. A video circulating showed the moment police apprehended two individuals riding a motorcycle while carrying a loudspeaker to scare residents with the ‘kuntilanak’ sound.

The incident occurred on Saturday night (9 May 2026). At that time, Bhabinkamtibmas Terong, Aiptu Gangsal Wirajati, received a report from residents complaining about the eerie sound.

“While I was on patrol, a resident approached me and said there was a creepy sound in the area (near the cemetery),” he said when contacted by detikJogja on Monday (11 May).

Gangsal, who was riding his official motorcycle and was about to start his duty, followed up on the report. He then directed his motorcycle towards the cemetery mentioned by the resident.

“As I passed by, I heard the sound, which was like a ‘kuntilanak’. Then I traced the source of the sound and found two teenagers sitting on a motorcycle on the side of the road,” he said.

Gangsal then approached the two teenagers. At that moment, the two teenagers were caught trying to turn off the loudspeaker connected to their smartphones.

“When I approached them, they seemed confused, and they were about to turn off the ‘kuntilanak’ sound, but it was still playing,” he said.

After that, Gangsal asked to meet with the parents of the two teenagers for guidance. The aim was to prevent them from repeating the same incident. When questioned, the two teenagers claimed that they were not doing it as a prank.

“They claimed they were just testing the sound, but I educated them not to use sounds like that and in places like this,” he concluded.
