The Mathematical Genius Who Achieved Average Annual Profits of 60%
James ‘Jim’ Simons is renowned as one of the world’s wealthiest educators and a veteran investor. He was the founder of a highly successful hedge fund company that recorded average annual profits of 60%.
Simons passed away on 10 May 2024 in New York City at the age of 86. As the founder of Renaissance Technologies, he left behind a massive track record in the global investment arena. Renaissance Technologies is a quantitative investment management firm that utilises mathematics and statistics as its primary investment methods. Its most famous managed fund is the Medallron Fund.
Between 1988 and 2018, the Medallion Fund generated more than US$100 billion in profits, with an average annual return of 66% before significant management fees. The annual return stood at 39% after fees, a performance that surpassed that of Warren Buffett, George Soros, Peter Lynch, and other prominent investors during the same period. However, for many years, the Medallion Fund has been inaccessible to the general public, managing funds only for Simons and his partners.
From Mathematician to Billionaire
While many mathematicians remain in academia, Simons became better known as a hedge fund manager due to his extensive involvement in the investment world. While there is often discourse regarding the modest salaries of lecturers, Simons proved that an academic career could lead to immense wealth. His story serves as a lesson in how a mathematics lecturer amassed a fortune of US$30.7 billion (approximately Rp 482 trillion).
An American mathematics professor, Simons had a lifelong passion for the subject, earning his PhD from the University of Berkeley in 1961 at the age of 23. His mathematical expertise led him to teach at Harvard University and assist the US Department of Defense as a mathematical codebreaker. However, driven by a need for greater financial stability, he sought ways to generate wealth through his analytical skills.
In his autobiography, ‘The Man Who Solved The Market: How Jim Simons Launched The Quant Revolution’ (2019), Simons recounts his search for ways to earn more for daily living. This led him to found a company called iStar, using his mathematical prowess to research and mathematically calculate stock market trades. This venture proved successful and birthed new business ideas in the investment sector.
In 1982, he established the investment firm Renaissance Technologies. There, Simons assembled a team of mathematicians, all tasked with creating trading models, analysing information, and predicting stock market dynamics. According to the Wall Street Journal, this approach distinguished Simons’ firm from its competitors. As a scientist, Simons treated the company as a laboratory, where experts could share ideas and collaborate to achieve optimal results.
Ultimately, this methodology proved highly profitable. Since 1988, the company has achieved annual returns of 39%. As the owner, Simons amassed significant wealth; Forbes noted his net worth reached US$30.7 billion, placing him as the 51st richest person in the world. He managed these business endeavours alongside his teaching duties at various universities. To this day, his company remains active, employing experts in mathematics, physics, and computer science to operate within the capital markets. Following his retirement, Simons also became an active philanthropist in the United States, donating significant sums to various causes.
