The Islamic Economics Society (MES) of Yogyakarta Special Region has cited the management model of Jogokariyan Mosque, pioneered by the late Muhammad Jazir ASP, as an inspiration for developing community-based Islamic economics.

“The late Ustadz proved that Islamic economics does not merely exist in books and regulations, but can grow tangibly within society through mosques,” said Edy Suandi Hamid, Chairman General of MES Yogyakarta, during the awarding of posthumous recognition to the late Ustadz at the Bank Indonesia Regional Office in Yogyakarta on Friday (27 February 2026).

Edy noted that one of Ustadz Jazir’s important legacies was the implementation of transparent and trustworthy mosque financial governance. Mosque financial reports were presented openly to the congregation, thereby fostering confidence and increasing community participation.

He further noted that the late Ustadz also introduced the principle of managing donation funds to ensure they were not left idle without benefit.

“Funds must circulate, move, and empower the community. Donation funds must return to the congregation in the form of concrete programmes that address community needs,” said Edy.

From these principles, the late Ustadz developed various mosque-based economic empowerment programmes, including a rice distribution system (rice ATM) for disadvantaged residents, Ramadan bazaars and markets to support member small and medium enterprises, community catering businesses, and progressive waqf development.
