The Irony of Anom Widiyantoro: A SOE Auditor Turned Corruption Suspect
Anom Widiyantoro, Regent of Pemalang, was caught in a sting operation (Operasi Tangkap Tangan, OTT) by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on 28–29 July 2026, in connection with alleged bribes relating to regional government projects and the buying and selling of official positions. The arrest stunned the public, as Anom had been in office for only around 17 months since being inaugurated on 20 February 2025 following the 2024 regional elections.
As of 29 July 2026 at 16.15 WIB, KPK investigators were still conducting intensive questioning of Anom and several other parties. Although no official announcement had been made regarding his status as a suspect, initial allegations point to the receipt of money from projects within the Pemalang Regency Government, as well as irregular practices in the filling of bureaucratic posts.
Anom Widiyantoro was not in fact a career politician. Before entering politics, he was known as a professional with a strong background in finance, auditing and risk management at state-owned enterprises (BUMN). The following are the key points of his career record:
Anom has a solid academic foundation in economics. He completed his undergraduate degree in Financial Management at Diponegoro University in 1996, then went on to pursue a master’s degree in economics and business at Padjadjaran University, graduating in 2005.
For approximately 25 years (1996–2021), Anom built his career at PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk. He held various strategic positions, ranging from expert staff member, internal auditor, and finance and personnel manager, to General Manager. This experience shaped his image as someone well versed in financial governance and construction audits.
Before running for Regent, Anom served as Director of Finance, Human Capital and Risk Management at PT Hotel Indonesia Property (HIPA) from 2021 to 2024. This position reinforced his expertise in managing risk and human resources at corporate level.
Anom decided to enter practical politics in the 2024 regional elections. With his professional background, he succeeded in winning the sympathy of the people of Pemalang and was inaugurated in early 2025. However, his brief tenure now faces legal trouble with the KPK.
Ironically, Anom’s expertise in auditing and risk management, which had long been his selling point, is now being tested by KPK investigators. The case adds to the long list of Pemalang regents embroiled in corruption, after his predecessor, former Regent Mukti Agung Wibowo, was also arrested by the KPK in 2022.
