The Incident Behind the Assault on Brimob Officers by Debt Collectors in Serang Triggered by Car Repossession Attempt
The Director of Criminal Investigation of the Banten Regional Police, Kombes Pol Dian Setyawan, stated that the group of debt collectors had been monitoring a 2024 Xenia belonging to Briptu F. The vehicle had significant arrears and was allegedly targeted for repossession. “The arrears have been outstanding since 2024, with only four payments made. They indeed intended to repossess the vehicle due to the arrears,” Kombues Dian told reporters on Thursday (4/6/2026).
Dian noted that the debt collection group obtained the list of delinquent vehicles via an application. The vehicle owned by Briptu F was included in the arrears list. “They used an application from PT PPNTT to identify vehicles with outstanding payments,” he said.
The vehicle was located in the Taktakan area, Serang City. As the vehicle was leaving a hospital, the collectors intercepted it and attempted to seize the car. “The victim’s wife, who works as a midwife at Fatimah Hospital, was returning from work at approximately 9:00 PM WIB when she was intercepted by several debt collectors,” Dian explained.
Briptu F’s wife subsequently contacted her husband, prompting Briptu F to arrive at the scene accompanied by Bripda FS and Bripda AY. “This officer (Briptu F) left the scene with his wife to ensure her safety,” said Dian.
An initial altercation broke out between the Brimob members and the debt collectors. This was followed by the arrival of a white Sigra vehicle carrying several individuals armed with sharp weapons, who proceeded to slash the two Brimob officers. “The weapons, including axes and machetes, were prepared inside a white Sigra car. Following the initial dispute between the Brimob members and the debt collectors, a white Sigra carrying six people arrived,” he stated. “They grabbed their equipment and immediately launched a blind attack on the Brimob personnel at the location.”
Following the attack, the perpetrators fled with both the vehicle in arrears and the debt collectors’ operational vehicle. Other Brimob members and local residents pursued them, leading to the arrest of two suspects, FN and YS, near the Serang Barat Toll Gate. Police subsequently arrested two other suspects, identified by the initials GB and MM, in the Balaraja area, Tangerang, on Wednesday (3/6). Authorities are still pursuing six other suspects believed to be involved in the case.
“We have secured four individuals so far. The others are still being pursued. We have recorded and identified all six suspects,” said Dian.
The Head of Public Relations for the Banten Regional Police, Kombes Pol Maruli Hutapea, confirmed that two Brimob members sustained machete wounds and required medical treatment. “The Brimob personnel suffered slash wounds to the right hand and injuries to the head,” he said. Meanwhile, the suspects FN and Ys, apprehended in Serang Barat, also sustained injuries after being mobbed by a crowd during their arrest on Tuesday (2/6).
