A clinical nutritionist from Universitas Indonesia, Dr. Diana Felicia Suganda (M.Kes), stressed the importance of maintaining electrolyte balance in the body to support daily activities. Electrolytes play vital roles that cannot be replaced simply by drinking plain water.

In a press conference in Jakarta, on Tuesday (19 May), Diana explained that around 60% to 65% of the human body consists of fluids, including water, blood, plasma, and electrolytes. There are four main electrolytes the body needs: sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

‘The body is unique and most of its content is fluids. All of these electrolytes help to balance fluids in the body, support muscle function during contraction and relaxation, and regulate blood pressure,’ said Diana.

In addition to maintaining fluid balance, electrolytes play important roles in supporting heart function, the nervous system, and bone health. Specifically, calcium and magnesium also influence brain contractility, especially during physical activity or exercise.

Diana warned that drinking plain water without adequate electrolyte intake can make the body’s electrolyte concentration more dilute. She also reminded people not to make a habit of ignoring thirst.

‘Sometimes we lose fluids and electrolytes without noticing. Sometimes through urination, sometimes through sweat, and we also lose it through breathing. If you already feel thirsty, that is actually a sign it has happened many times,’ she concluded.

Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, and calcium play important roles in maintaining fluid balance, nerve function, muscle contraction, and stability of blood pressure.

The body’s main electrolytes are calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphate, potassium, and sodium. Symptoms of electrolyte deficiency vary depending on the level and some are more serious.
