The Importance of Electric Motorcycle Type Testing: From Batteries to Safety
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Electric motorcycles marketed in Indonesia cannot be sold directly. The vehicles must first pass type testing to ensure their safety and suitability for use on the road. Head of the Roadworthiness Testing and Motor Vehicle Certification Agency (BPLJSKB), Iman Sukandar, stated that the testing of electric motorcycles covers many aspects, from electrical systems, batteries, to functional safety. “When starting an electric vehicle, it must go through two ignition stages. So it cannot be just one click and immediately move forward,” Iman told Kompas.com in Bekasi, West Java, recently. Iman explained that in the first stage, the vehicle cannot yet be operated. The motorcycle can only move after the rider performs the second step according to the system procedure. According to Iman, this system is designed to prevent the vehicle from moving unintentionally when first turned on. In addition, the vehicle shutdown process is made simpler to facilitate it in emergency situations. Besides functional safety, electric motorcycles must also undergo various other tests, including battery endurance, charging systems, protection against short circuits, and electrical component safety. The entire series of tests is conducted to ensure that the vehicle is safe for public use and meets the applicable safety standards in Indonesia.
