Children’s digestive health is now a serious concern for health experts. Far from being merely an excretory organ, the digestive system is recognised as crucial for optimal growth and development, from nutrient absorption to cognitive advancement. Digestive issues often dismissed by parents as minor, if recurring, can have long-term impacts on a child’s future.

Dr Ariani Dewi Widodo, Specialist Paediatric Gastrohepatology Consultant, explained that the digestive system is a complex, evolving structure from early life. Gut microbiota balance is key in this process.

“The child’s digestive system is not just an organ for digestion but a complex system. Gut microbiota balance is vital as it significantly influences nutrient absorption and daily comfort,” said Ariani.

The early life period is a critical window for gut microbiota formation. During this phase, a child’s digestive system is highly sensitive to diet and environment. Imbalances can lead to irritability, poor appetite, and suboptimal growth.

One recommended nutritional solution is prebiotics, which feed beneficial gut bacteria. Scientific evidence supports that a Triple Prebiotic combination (FOS, GOS, and Inulin) promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus.

World Digestive Health Day (WDHD) 2026 on 29 May has the global theme “Chronic Diarrhea: Don’t Flush the Signs Away”, urging parents to be more vigilant about even minor digestive symptoms.

Medical & Scientific Affairs Director of Danone Indonesia, Dr Ray Wagiu Basrowi, MKK, FRSPH, emphasised the importance of health literacy for parents. He noted many everyday child issues stem from undetected digestive problems.

“We aim to assist parents through science-based education and digital innovations like the AI Poop Tracker. This technology allows parents to monitor their child’s gut health practically and sustainably,” Ray said.

A healthy digestive system directly contributes to a child’s quality of life through three key aspects:

Through WDHD 2026 initiatives, public awareness is expected to rise, enabling earlier detection of digestive issues. Consulting healthcare professionals remains the primary step if parents notice inconsistencies in their child’s digestive health to ensure a solid foundation for future development.

Parents are advised to carefully check children’s milk compositions, particularly added sugar content and production transparency, for optimal nutrition.

Paediatric specialist Dr Frieda Handayani highlighted the role of prebiotics in supporting good bacteria, nutrient absorption, and preventing constipation in children.

Health expert Ray Wagiu Basrowi stressed that improving children’s nutrition and digestive systems is crucial to achieving the national stunting target of 14.2% by 2029.
