The Hidden Secrets of Hajj Rituals

Throughout human history, scientists and historians often speak of great discoveries that have altered the course of civilisation. The wheel facilitated human mobility. Fire transformed survival methods. Electricity birthed the industrial revolution. Even the discovery of atomic energy reshaped modern global politics.

Yet above all these, there is one ‘discovery’ far greater and more decisive for humanity’s future: the path to God. This was bequeathed by Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) through the rituals of Hajj.

As written by prolific Egyptian author Abbas Mahmud al-Aqqad (1889-1964) in his book Ibrahim Abu-l Anbiya’: ‘The discovery associated with Prophet Abraham is humanity’s greatest achievement, one that scientists and historians cannot ignore. It cannot be compared to the wheel, fire, electricity, or the secrets of atomic energy, no matter how significant their impacts.’

Therefore, understanding Hajj is not merely about an annual Islamic ritual. Hajj is a reconstruction of the history of monotheism. It is a living museum of Prophet Abraham and his family’s journey in discovering God, building a civilisation of faith, and resisting the worship of worldly things.

Allah says: ‘And remember when Abraham was tested by his Lord with certain commands, which he fulfilled.’ (Quran 2:124)

This verse shows that Abraham was no ordinary prophet. He was a man who successfully passed life’s greatest trials, deserving to be a leader for humanity. Indeed, all Hajj rituals are the footsteps of that spiritual journey.

When pilgrims circumambulate the Kaaba, they are remembering the centre of monotheism built by Abraham and Ishmael: ‘And when Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House…’ (Quran 2:127)

The Kaaba is not merely a black stone structure in the desert. It is the symbol of humanity’s greatest spiritual revolution: shifting the focus of worship from created beings to God alone.
