The Group of People Who Walk with Faces on the Day of Judgment
One of the stages humanity will face on the Day of Judgment is gathering at the Mahshar. All humans, from the time of Prophet Adam (AS) until the Day of Judgment, will be assembled there to account for their deeds before Allah SWT.
Here are several descriptions from the Quran and Hadith regarding human conditions at the Mahshar.
- All Humanity Gather at the Mahshar
Allah SWT states:
yāuma tubaddalu al-arḍu ghaira al-arḍi wa-s-samāwātu wa-barazū lillāhil-wāḥidil-qahhār
Yauma tubaddalu al-arḍu ghaira al-arḍi wa-s-samāwātu wa-barazū lillāhil-wāḥidil-qahhār.
‘(That is) on the Day when the earth will be replaced by another earth and the heavens as well, and all will appear before Allah, the One, the Irresistible.’
(Surah Ibrahim: 48)
A Hadith states that the Mahshar is an extremely clean and level plain with no marks or traces.
qāla rasūlu llāhi ṣallā llāhu ’alayhi wa-sallama: «yuḥsharu an-nāsu yawma al-qiyāmati ’alā arḍin bayḍā’a ’afra’a kaqurṣati an-naqiyyi lāisa fīhā ’alamun li-aḥad»
Yuḥsharu an-nāsu yawma al-qiyāmati ’alā arḍin bayḍā’a ’afra’a kaqurṣati an-naqiyyi lāisa fīhā ’alamun li-aḥad.
‘Mankind will be gathered on the Day of Judgment on a white, smooth plain like a round loaf of fine flour, with no marks for anyone.’ (Bukhari and Muslim)
- Humanity Resurrected Naked
On the Day of Judgment, all humans will be resurrected without clothing, footwear, or circumcision. However, the severity of the situation means people will no longer concern themselves with others’ modesty.
qāla rasūlu llāhi ṣallā llāhu ’alayhi wa-sallama: «yuḥsharu an-nāsu yawma al-qiyāmati ḥufātan ’urātan ghurlā». qultu: yā rasūla llāhi, an-nisā’u war-rijālu jamī’an yanẓuru ba‘ḍuhum ilā ba‘ḍ? qāla: yā ’ā’ishatu, al-amru asyaddu min an yanẓura ba‘ḍuhum ilā ba‘ḍ
Yuḥsharu an-nāsu yawma al-qiyāmati ḥufātan ’urātan ghurlā. Qultu: Yā Rasūlallāh, an-nisā’u war-rijālu jamī’an yanẓuru ba‘ḍuhum ilā ba‘ḍ? Qāla: Yā ’Ā’ishah, al-amru asyaddu min an yanẓura ba‘ḍuhum ilā ba‘ḍ.
‘Mankind will be gathered on the Day of Judgment barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.’ I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, will men and women all look at each other?’ He replied, ‘O Aisha, the situation will be far more severe than merely looking at each other.’ (Bukhari and Muslim)
