The development of phytochemicals and a sustainable health industry is a crucial strategy for harnessing Indonesia’s rich biodiversity. As a megabiodiverse country, Indonesia possesses thousands of plant species with the potential to be sources of bioactive compounds for developing medicines, health supplements, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. This potential makes medicinal plants the primary foundation for phytochemical development, the science that studies the natural chemical compounds in plants and their biological activities. According to Harborne (1998), plants produce various secondary metabolites that play a vital role in natural defence and have the potential to be utilised as raw materials for the modern health industry. Various secondary metabolites found in plants, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, steroids, glycosides, and phenolic compounds, are known to possess diverse biological activities. These compounds act as antioxidants, antibacterials, antivirals, antifungals, anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory agents. Therefore, the exploration and characterisation of phytochemical content in various Indonesian plants is a strategic step in producing safe, effective, high-quality health products with significant economic value. Phytochemical research also provides the scientific basis for proving the efficacy of medicinal plants that have long been used traditionally. The use of medicinal plants in Indonesia has occurred for centuries through local knowledge passed down through generations. Various plants such as turmeric (Curcuma longa), Javanese ginger (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), ginger (Zingiber officinale), sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata), meniran (Phyllanthus niruri), gotu kola (Centella asiatica), betel leaf (Piper betle), and cat’s whiskers (Orthosiphon aristatus) have been used by communities as traditional medicinal ingredients. Scientific research has subsequently proven that these plants contain bioactive compounds with pharmacological benefits. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2013) also stated that around 80% of the world’s population still uses traditional medicine as part of primary healthcare, indicating that the opportunity to develop natural product-based industries continues to grow. Advances in science and technology have driven the transformation of the traditional herbal medicine industry into a modern health industry. Natural products are no longer produced solely based on empirical experience but have undergone extraction processes, active compound identification, quality standardisation, and safety and efficacy testing through preclinical and clinical trials. According to the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM, 2022), the development of natural medicines must meet quality, safety, and efficacy aspects to compete in both national and international markets. Thus, phytochemistry serves as the scientific foundation supporting the creation of fitofarmaka products with quality equivalent to modern pharmaceutical products. Beyond the scientific aspect, phytochemical development is also supported by the wealth of ethnobotanical knowledge held by Indonesian communities. Each region has different traditions of using medicinal plants, varying in plant types, processing techniques, dosage, and herbal combinations used to treat various diseases. This local knowledge is an invaluable source of information in the search for new bioactive compounds. Martin (1995) explained that ethnobotany acts as a bridge between traditional knowledge and scientific research, thereby accelerating the discovery of plants with the potential to be developed as medicinal raw materials. Despite its enormous potential, the development of phytochemicals and a plant-based health industry still faces various challenges. One of the main obstacles is the exploitation of natural resources that has not fully implemented sustainability principles. Excessive harvesting of medicinal plants from their natural habitats without adequate cultivation can lead to population decline and even threaten the survival of certain species. Furthermore, deforestation, land conversion, and climate change also affect the existence of various medicinal plants in the wild. Therefore, conservation efforts and sustainable management of biological resources are prerequisites for maintaining the continuity of a biodiversity-based health industry (Bappenas, 2016). Another challenge is the limited research on many native Indonesian plant species. Most endemic plants have not been studied in depth regarding their phytochemical content or biological activities, even though these species have the potential to produce new compounds that could be developed into innovative drugs. This situation highlights the importance of increasing research investment, strengthening laboratory facilities, and fostering collaboration between universities, research institutions, the government, and industry to accelerate national phytochemical development. From a national development perspective, the phytochemical development of medicinal plants also supports the self-sufficiency of the Indonesian pharmaceutical industry. Currently, the need for medicinal raw materials is still heavily dependent on imports, making the utilisation of local resources a strategic step to strengthen the health sector’s resilience. The development of medicinal plant cultivation, the downstreaming of research results, increasing the capacity of the fitofarmaka industry, and the protection of traditional knowledge will provide economic added value while opening up export opportunities for natural product-based goods. Thus, phytochemistry is the primary foundation for building a sustainable health industry. Indonesia’s wealth of medicinal plants, supported by its biodiversity, is a strategic asset that must be managed wisely, integratively, and sustainably to provide maximum benefits for public health and the national economy.
